What is CNR Number? How to Find Your Case CNR Number

If you have a court case in India, you've probably heard of the term "CNR number." This guide explains everything you need to know about CNR numbers — what they are, how to find yours, and how to use them to track your case online.

What is a CNR Number?

CNR stands for Case Number Record. It is a unique 16-digit alphanumeric number assigned to every case filed in Indian courts under the eCourts project. Think of it as your case's unique identity number — no two cases in India share the same CNR number.

The CNR system was introduced by the Supreme Court's eCommittee as part of the eCourts Mission Mode Project to digitize Indian courts and make case information accessible online.

CNR Number Format Explained

A CNR number follows this format:

XXXX + CC + NNN + YYYYYYY
  • XXXX — 4-letter state/court code (e.g., DLHC for Delhi High Court, MHHC for Bombay HC)
  • CC — 2-digit district/court complex code
  • NNN — 3-digit establishment code
  • YYYYYYY — 7-digit unique case serial number

How to Find Your CNR Number

There are several ways to find your case's CNR number:

1. Check Your Case Filing Receipt

When a case is filed, the court issues a filing receipt that contains the CNR number. If you have your original filing documents, check for a 16-digit alphanumeric code.

2. Ask Your Advocate

Your advocate (lawyer) will have the CNR number in their case records. Simply ask them to share it with you.

3. Search by Case Number on LegalIntelli

If you know your case type and number (e.g., WP(C) 1234/2025), you can search on LegalIntelli and we'll show you the CNR number in the case details.

4. Search by Party Name

Don't have any case number? Search by your name (as petitioner or respondent) on LegalIntelli Case Tracker. Once you find your case, the CNR number will be displayed.

5. Visit the eCourts Portal

The official eCourts portal (services.ecourts.gov.in) also allows you to search and find your CNR number.

Why is the CNR Number Important?

  • Unique identification — Pinpoints your exact case across all Indian courts
  • Instant case lookup — The fastest way to check your case status
  • Cross-court tracking — Works even if your case is transferred between courts
  • Official records — Accepted as a valid case identifier by all courts
  • Alert setup — Required for setting up case tracking alerts on platforms like LegalIntelli

CNR Number vs Case Number — What's the Difference?

A case number (like WP(C) 1234/2025) is assigned by a specific court and may not be unique across courts. The CNR number is nationally unique and assigned under the eCourts system. While case numbers can be similar across courts, CNR numbers are always unique.
